Name change alert!

After the publication of a paper on Prayer Plant genetics in 2012, over 200 Calathea species were moved into the genus Goeppertia due to the findings. The name Calathea Orbifolia is still used, but as a synonym instead of being scientifically correct!

Large leaves at maturity!

One of the largest species of ‘Prayer Plants’, the beautiful, orbicular leaves on this plant can reach up to a foot in diameter at maturity!

Lovers of rainwater

A common ‘problem’ with Prayer Plants is the gradual (and seemingly inevitable) browning of the leaf tips. This is due to these plant’s high sensitivity to chemicals in their water, which they deposit at the ends of their leaves. Thereby, watering them with filtered or rain water will make all the difference!

Plant bio

Calathea Orbifolia are native to Bolivia and are usually found in the understory of the tropical rainforests in South America, with foliage overhead, meaning they are used to dappled sunlight and conditions which replicate these environments as much as possible.

They produce small white flowers in their natural habitat, however the main interest is certainly their stunning striped leaves.

They are part of the Marantaceae family of plants, also known as the Prayer Plant family.

Care tips

Light Growing in the understory of Brazilian rainforests, this plant is used to slightly lower light levels than some. However, to ensure your plant is thriving, bright, indirect light is best, with up to half an hour of soft, passing sunlight, imitating filtered sun it might see through other foliage.

Water & Humidity Calathea Orbifolia absolutely thrive on high humidity, and consistent soil water levels. They can be tolerant of drought, but only for short periods before damage occurs. Water evenly when the top layer of soil is dry, ensuring it drains thoroughly, and keep the humidity jungle-like by using a humidifier, a pebble tray, or grouping plants together.

Temperature Not very tolerant of changeable temperatures or sneaky draughts. for best growth, keep this plant in consistent indoor temperatures of between 18 - 24°C.
